White & Red Wine Calories
All About Wine Calories Wine is now enjoyed by so many people with a great amount of interest in determining wine calories amongst various kinds of wine. The most important thing to remember is that the differences can be vast from one kind of wine to another. Here's a basic guide though that should help you determine the calories and fit wine into your healthy lifestyle. Sweet or Strong Wines Here are some easy calorie calculations that I got from the excellent video by Mark Phillips at the Wine Tasting Association. The majority of calories in a wine come from the alcohol. That's why wines that are very low in alcohol have fewer calories per ounce than wines with a high percent alcohol. For example, a 5 ounce glass of wine with 8% alcohol has about 64 calories a serving. Compare that to the same size glass of a Port wine with a very high alcohol content of 19%. It has about 192 calories in a serving. Calories in Red Wine The calories in types of red wine differ from one style to the next. As a basic overview, a four ounce glass of Cabernet Sauvignon includes about 90 calories. A Bordeaux wine has a few more, coming in at 95, equal to that of a Beaujolais. Merlot also has approximately 95 calories in a four ounce glass, while a Chianti wine will come in at 100 calories per serving. One explanation for the variance is the percent of alcohol calories red wine differs from type to type. Calories in White Wine As with the red wines, the white wine calories differs between the varietals. A Chardonnay will include approximately 90 calories in a four ounce serving, as will another popular white, the Riesling. A Sauvignon Blanc on the other hand comes in even lower, with just 80 calories in a four ounce glass. Serving Sizes Affect Wine Calories It's crucial to remember that the listed approximations above are for four ounce servings. You may find wine calories to be given as quite different in various sources, so the first thing you always have to check is the serving size. For example, most of us enjoy healthier portions of wine to the tune of perhaps a six ounce glass. A wine with 90 calories in four ounces then has 135 calories in six ounces. So keep in mind that the more you drink the more wine calories your glass will have. There's no reason why wine can't be enjoyed even by those of us trying to be very strict about our diets. With most kinds of wine coming in at under 100 calories for a four ounce serving, it can be easily included into your nutritional program that features the benefits of drinking red wine. However, be wary of high alcohol wines which pack more wine calories per ounce and seeing those small calorie totals skyrocket.
