Red wine storage is an often overlooked, but hugely important component to successful wine enjoyment. Whether you have grand plans to have a wine cellar with cabinets and build up a massive collection of bottles, or you just want want to drink the few bottles you keep around the house to maintain their serving temperature, taste and quality, then you need to learn the basics of proper red wine storage. There are several different factors that are important to remember when it comes to storing red wine. The first is that a bottle of wine needs to be protected from light. Strong light such as direct sunlight can penetrate the wine's bottle and ruin the wine's composition and flavoring. The result is a poor tasting wine that doesn't even resemble what you had purchased. Wine Storage Temperature Another important consideration for red wine storage is that your wine also needs to be in the right temperature and humidity. Too little or too much humidity can both serve to distort your wine's quality. Meanwhile, a temperature that is too high will quickly degrade your wine as well. The ideal red wine storage temperature is between 50 and 55 degrees, or between 10 to 16 degrees Celsius. This is true even though most people don't serve their red wines chilled from the fridge, and instead serve at room temperature! Wine Cellar Storage All of the above factors are why people have wine cellars for red wine storage. A cellar is free of light, remains at a consistent, cool temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit with an intermediate level of humidity. Of course, for most of us, having a wine cellar is simply not an option. We don't have the time, storage area and money to put into something of that size and stature. Additionally, most of us don't keep enough red or white wine around to warrant that level of investment. In many cases a stackable rack in a cool area with minimal temperature change is fine. Regardless of your budgetary constraints, or your level of wine collecting or drinking, there is a storage option available for you that will satisfy your needs and desires. Wine Storage Furniture One option that lots of people turn to is the use of wine storage cabinets. Wine storage cabinets can be installed into an existing cabinet arrangement in your kitchen or living room, or they can be added to the side of something else. They provide an ideal combination of light prevention, protection with proper humidity and temperature control. Refrigerated Wine Storage Another option that lots of people use for simple around the home red wine storage are small wine refrigerators. The benefits to these is that they can be set to specific temperatures, and even multiple temperatures throughout the fridge so that you can store different kinds of wine and keep the cork and the wine in great condition. Smaller countertop sized models are also available for when you just need to take care of a few bottles at a time. No matter how much wine you intend to keep around the house, wines should be served lower than room temperature. Red wine storage is important therefore whether you are a serious connoisseur or just someone who enjoys a glass or two every now and again. Consider looking into wine storage cabinets or other available options such as specially designed refrigerators.
