The Lodi area which includes Woodbridge and Acampo is located about a half hour south of Sacramento in San Joaquin County. The grape growers here are from generations of farming families including Robert Mondavi. Visiting this rural area is fun. Did I mention the Wine and Chocolate Festival held every February? The Wine & Visitor Center has a tasting room with knowledgeable staff to give an overview of the growing region, maps, directions and ideas for a tour. Stop there first and check out the Wine and Roses Hotel, spa, and restaurant. The Lodi wineries are all conveniently located near Interstate 5, exit Highway 12 and head east. Downtown Lodi is easily reached via Highway 99 from several well marked exits including West Turner Road where the Visitor Center is located. They make it easy to find and tour the tasting rooms and cellars, most are open daily. Some of the must see wineries in this area include Jessie's Grove, Michael-David, Van Ruiten and Grands Amis. All are well worth the visit because of the friendly atmosphere and very good wines. Driving to the wineries in Lodi is easy, all the roads are paved, smooth, straight and there are signs on every corner pointing the way. Downtown Lodi is a pleasant visit too. There are shops, restaurants and art galleries along School Street. First time visitors to the area are welcomed at the Visitors Center where the staff is very helpful in giving directions, providing maps and telling about the wines and people of the area. The Center is adjacent to the Wine and Roses Hotel and Restaurant and that alone is worth a stop to visit and have a very nice lunch while enjoying local wines.
