List of Sweet Red Wines

Vermouth: At the top of this list of sweet red wines is the famous Vermouth, a fortified wine. (Vermouth is also available as a dry white wine), the sweet red is mainly used as an apéritif and sometimes used in mixed drinks. Just in case you wondered, Vermouth is a wine and it gets its flavors from spices and herbs. Fortified wine has a higher alcohol level than most wines. That is because the extra alcohol is added. The first vermouths were made in Italy but now many of excellent quality are made in the USA.

Brachetto: Most common it Italy, this red is slightly sweet.

Ice Wine: This is very sweet and quite good. The wine is made from grapes harvested in the winter and they almost look like raisins on the vine. The quality is usually very good and this is one of the more expensive sweet wines on line.

Lambrusco: Also most common it Italy this red is slightly sweet. Stay away from cheap versions, this is a good example of getting what you pay for.

List of Sweet Red Wines Continued:

Gallo Family Sweet Red: Light to medium bodied Sweet Red has flavors of red fruit. It has a soft finish, easy to enjoy, especially chilled.

Tokaji: Mostly from Hungary it is usually a quality wine and loaded with flavors. Bottles can easily cost upwards from $80 and are usually very good. Some consider Tokaji the very best sweet red wines on the market.

Port: Many people don't actually realize that port is really a type of wine. Among the three classes of port, if you're looking for the best sweet wine you should get a quality ruby. The oldest class of port, vintage, will be the least sweet. Remember, port wines tend to be high in alcohol (about 19%) compared to most other wines.

Dessert Wines: Most wine stores and websites will have separate areas for desert wines, which are going to be higher in alcohol and also extremely sweet. Typically they also come in smaller bottles and you'll accordingly want to pour smaller glass sizes. Late harvest Red Zinfandel:This red grape makes one of the traditional red wines grown in America and is usually served dry when harvested at the end of a typical growing season. Many times (but not always) theses grapes were not able to be harvested on time. Probably a long rain storm stopped the harvest and these grapes were brought in a week or two later than planned, perhaps longer. The sugar content of the grapes, measured in Brix is high which helps the resulting wine to be sweet. If you can find a late harvest Zinfandel; buy it because it usually gets good sweet red wine recommendations. Another reason to buy is that it is somewhat rare because of nature's uncertainties.

When referring to my list of sweet red wines I would call these pink wines a red because it started as a red grape. You are welcome to disagree but that is my opinion.

When choosing between the above list of sweet red wines and all of your other options, you may want a few additional tips to help make a proper decision when you buy wine on line. First of all, read the labels and descriptions of the wine you're buying. Check the varietals and wine region to learn more about the types of red wine you are considering. Something described as particularly fruity will also likely be sweet. On the other hand, dry wines rarely are sweet, so avoid anything labeled as dry when looking for sweet red wine.

Of course, you don't have to limit your choices for the top sweet wine to only reds. There are many wonderful sweet whites, such as Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Viognier. As mentioned, be sure to check out the labels to help narrow down your selection and consider branching out to any of the above choices from the list of sweet red wines given.
