J. Lohr Vineyards

The big news for J. Lohr Vineyards, a family owned winery, is the Wine Enthusiast Magazine 2010 American Winery of the Year Award for their generous work to help the wine industry.

The winery is mostly located in the Central California coastal areas of Arroyo Seco in Monterey County (south of San Francisco) and in the Paso Robles area still further south. In terms of beautiful geography, it does not get much better.

More importantly the family focuses on making quality wine. They are not all work and no play though. There are two tasting rooms, one in San Jose and the other in Paso Robles. Each location features a visitor center that holds events to celebrate and enjoy the wine.

In terms of success, their wines are big sellers not only in the USA. They also have a special label, Painter Bridge, designed for sales overseas. Their premium wines, sold under the Cuvée Series and Vineyard Series labels, are limited production which means they took the time to make them as best they can.

You can find this label at most retail places that sell wine, it is that popular. It is a big winery and if you look around enough you are sure to find a few really good bottles besides the everyday stuff that is commonly available. This winery has a lot to offer in terms of variety and selection, so it is worth the extra effort.

Getting that award in 2010 was a big deal, there are over 4,000 wineries in the USA. It is a big distinction.

When I am out of town and not familiar with the wines on the shelf of the local store, this is one of those reliable names you can depend on year in, year out. Enjoy.
