Throughout the atlas of French wine you will see many regions that produce wine in quantities up to sixty million hectoliters annually. This translates to about eight billion bottles. Behind Spain, France has the second largest area of vineyards in the whole world. It is the largest wine producer in the world, losing this title only one time in 2008 to Italy. The unique French combination of natural factors associated with each vineyard on the map is called the ‘terroir’ concept.
The French wine guide will include factors such as terrain, a hill’s slope, altitude, underlying rocks and soil. This also includes the microclimate including variations in temperature, humidity, wind and rain as well as the orientation of the vineyard to the sun. No two French vineyards have the exact same terroir even if they are located in the same locale. This is the basis of the AOC system which is the Appellation d’origine controlee, which has since become a worldwide standard. Many grape varieties come from France including the Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The full size map of wine producing areas in France is under regulation by the acronym INAO which stands for Institut National des Appelations d’Origine. Every French appellation is defined by INAO in terms to the specific region’s own wine characteristics. If wine does not meet the strict criteria of INAO, it is demoted to a lower appellation or even into Vin de Table or Vin de Pays. The French wine regions included in the maps are South West France, Savoy, Côtes du Rhône, Provence, Loire Valley, Languedoc-Roussillon, Jura, Corsica, Champagne, Bourgogne, Burgundy, Bordeaux and Alsace. Traditionally, France was always its own wine’s largest consumer.
