Edmeades Zinfandel Background and History
When Dr. Donald Edmeades first planted vines on his land in the Anderson Valley, people thought he was being foolish. Almost forty years later Edmeades wine has become the standard-bearer on the Mendocino County wine frontier. Surprisingly, Edmeades was not the first to grow vine in that region. In fact, people had been growing vines in these areas long before Edmeades planted his first grape. The gold rush was a disappointment for most of the miners. Many of those miners became grape growers in order to earn a living after losing all hope of hitting gold. Consequently, the first vineyard in the County was planted by Samuel Orr who was a native of Kentucky. Taking his queue, many other people started growing vines in the area. In the late-1800s, the Europeans – mainly Swiss and Italians - began growing vines in better parts of the North coast. Still, by that time, winemaking was not a commercial enterprise. So, in this sense Edmeades was the first commercial grower in the Anderson Valley. In 1963, he planted 24 acres of land with Zinfandel. Hoping to create a business enterprise from their earthly yields, the family started its own brand in 1972. Unfortunately, Edmeades died in the same year. After his death, his son Deron took over the business after his death. The Gold Series - California's best small family-owned wineries. Edmeades was bought by Jess Jackson in 1988 who modernized the winery as well as planted the vineyards again. During 1994 to 2004, Edmeades Zinfandel won 10 gold medals at major competitions. Apart from that, it also received positive wine ratings from Robert M. Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast. Edmeades also enjoys a faithful fan following all over the country and has added Petite Sirah vineyards.
