Dry Red Wine Types

Overview of Dry Red Wine Types:
As you expand your knowledge of wine, you may come to find that you like particular styles or compositions, such as dry red wines. Once you learn this about yourself you'll clearly want to know more about available dry red wine types, and all of the different varietals that lend themselves to this taste. Take a look at this overview of red wines to help expand your horizon for the wines that you enjoy.

What Separates Dry Red Wines?
Before looking at different dry red wine types, it's a good idea to learn what makes something dry. First of all, dry is on the opposite side of the spectrum from sweet. Of course nothing you are drinking is "dry", dry really refers to the amount of sugar and sweetness that the wine contains.

What is dry wine?
Dry red wines are wines with very little or no residual sugar. The result is that you don't get any sweetness, and instead you get all of the other flavors that the dry red wines include. This is what makes them so attractive for fans of red wine in general. You really get to enjoy all of the various tastes and flavors once they aren't washed out by sugar. Therefore, dry red wine types tend to be complex and full of diversity.

Dry Red Wine Types
One of the most popular dry red wines is the standard Merlot. A Merlot isn't as dry as many of the other wines on the list, instead it tends to be more moderate and mild. Since it is so smooth and lies near the middle of the spectrum, it's a great introductory wine to enjoy before venturing into some of the other dry red wine types.

Which wines are considered dry?
The driest red wines tend to be Cabernet Sauvignons and Shiraz, or Syrah. With a Cabernet Sauvignon you will get a heavy, thick wine that typically contains notes of spiciness or oakiness. A Shiraz can also be spicy, but may also be a bit fruity as well. Either of these wines would go great with a perfectly cooked, juicy steak, or another big, filling meal.

In between Merlot and the driest varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz, more dry red wines are also available. One of these is Pinot Noir. Because it is low in tannins and has a medium to light body, it's very easy to drink and doesn't always seem as dry as some of the other dry red wine types. A red Zinfadel is heavy and hearty, and has big, strong and bold flavors.

After taking a look at this list you should never be left without a few great dry red wines at your disposal. Within these dry red wine types there is of course much diversity, and flavors will always be varied even within a class such as this. Of course, learning your tastes and which red wines are dry is half of the fun of drinking and tasting wine and delving into dry red wines and other different types of wines as well.
