If you're looking for a great wine of the month club, then you may be interested in a California wine club. California is growing in reputation as a wine producing region, not just in this country but around the world. In fact, the state actually has several different wine regions and produces many different varietals of great wine. There are over 1,200 wineries in the state and California produces about 90% of the wine that's made in America. A California wine club can focus on one of the main regions of the state, or you could end up getting a cross-state sampler that draws from many different wineries and vineyards. When most people think of California wine, they think about Napa Valley and maybe Sonoma County. Well the truth is that these are only two AVAs - American Viticultural Areas - within one of the four main regions of the state.
Both Napa Valley and Sonoma County are located within the North Coast region. The other three main regions in the state are the Central Coast, South Coast and Central Valley. All of these main regions have many different AVAs, and even sub-AVAs which break down the regions into even smaller groupings. As you may be starting to realize, there is lots of variety for a California wine club. With all of these different regions and wineries there are many different wines that are made in California. Some of the most popular include Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfadel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet Franc and more are all growing in importance as well. A California wine club can therefore focus on any one of these varietals or any number of others. It's all up to you what goes into the selections for a wine of the month club. You could focus generally on all reds or all whites in a California wine club, or you can opt to get more specific and hone in only on specific varietals, or specific varietals from specific regions and AVAs. So when might a wine of the month club be a good idea? The options are truly limitless when it comes to a California wine club. With over 1,200 wineries in the state and 90% of the country's production, there is no shortage of great wine to choose from. You can be as general or specific as you want, just remember that there is much more to the state than Napa Valley. The famous wine touring region is only one small subset of one of the massive regions in the state. Great for a gift for a friend or for yourself, a California wine club is affordable, accessible and most importantly of all, fun.
