My best cheap wines list reads like a poster child for the frugal wine drinker. While I’m an avid wine lover, I tend to purchase wines that are under $10 for every day wines. There are some cheap wines that will knock your socks off and others that will eat through them. When looking for the best cheap wines, I’ve found price points below $6.99 a bottle tend to taste like too much like cheap wine. However you can find wines in the $6.99-$9.99 price range that taste more like $15 wines. The key to finding the best cheap wine is really through trial and error.

Budget Wine Recommendations

Robert Mondavi, the Godfather of California wines, offers a wide variety of wines in varying price points. Robert Mondavi Private Selection produces Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Fume Blanc, Syrah, Zinfandel and Johannisberg Riesling. The majority of the Private Selection bottles can be found for less than $8.99. Their Cabernet Sauvignon highlights sweet black cherry and dark berry fruits. The bouquet consists of red fruits and chocolate, intense flavors of blackberry, mocha and more chocolate. Complex flavors and soft tannins make this a very loving wine. A blend of Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet, the bold flavors are consistent with each sip. One of the best cheap wines you can find across the nation for around $8.99.

More American Wines for Less

Joel Peterson, the Godfather of California Zinfandel and founder of Ravenswood Winery has a motto of “No Wimpy Wines”. The Ravenswood Vintners Collection is priced around $7.99 and from their signature Zinfandels to their little known Chardonnay, you can be sure, you’re getting quality and spectacular wine for mere peanuts. The Zinfandel is full of spicy flavors of oak, raspberries and blueberries. The Chardonnay is full of peach and citrus fruits with a well balanced acidity.

Columbia Crest winery is one of those under $6.99 exceptional wines. Two Vines Cabernet is filled with strawberry, cherry and cola aromas and flavors is a great buy at just $5.99. Their Columbia Crest Grand Estates are THE best cheap wines priced under $8.99 and offers consistent flavors and quality with each vintage. Columbia Crest’s Reserve Cabernet was voted number one red wine of the year in 2009 by Wine Spectator. While this wine does not fall under the cheap wine category, it indicates Columbia Crest’s presence in quality wines.
