Free, Basic Wine Information

If you're looking for some high quality, accurate basic wine information then you've come to the right place. As people begin their journeys from novice wine drinkers to full fledged connoisseurs, they often face many obstacles. One of which is that accurate free wine information is hard to come by. That's why it's so important to have a basic wine information resource available to you as you begin to get to know different regions, varieties and tastes.

Today, wine is grown all over the world. There are high quality wines being produced in places such as the United States, New Zealand and South America. However, the traditional winemaking powerhouses are still the most popular in many respects. Here's an overview with essential wine information for the three classic wine producers, France, Italy and Spain.

Basic Wine Information for France

No one produces more wine than France does, and no country exports more wine around the world than France, accounting for 34% of worldwide exports! It's the only place that you can get authentic champagne (from the Champagne region) but the country is really known for its masterful reds.

The Bordeaux region is probably the most famous wine region in the world, and those wines can be some of the most sought after and expensive of any varietals. The Burgundy region is also extremely famous. Common grapes used in French wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. White grapes include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Muscadelle.

Information on Italian Wine

With more than a million vineyards in the country, Italy produces about 20% of the world's total supply of wine. While all wines can be excellently paired with food, the Italian wines all seem to mesh wonderfully well with various foods, most notably the hearty meats and pastas of Italy itself.

The most common Italian wine name is the red wine Chianti from the Sangiovese grape grown in Tuscany. The Nebbiolo grape produces popular Barolo and Barbaresco red wines. Popular whites include Pinot Grigio and the Moscato grape which is used to make a variety of sweet, semi sweet and sparkling wines.

Basic Wine Information for Spain

The third largest producer of wine in the world, behind Italy and France, Spain actually has the most land space dedicated to wine growing of anywhere in the world. The most famous region in the country is Rioja, known for its production of high quality red wines using grapes such as Tempranillo.

Perhaps the second most popular region is Ribera de Duero, where Tempranillo grapes are used along with more common red grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot. The Rueda region produces white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and the Peneds region makes a full gamut of wines including Merlots, fruity whites and sparkling Cavas.
