The 4th largest wine exporter in the world, Australia accounts for seven hundred and sixty million liters of wine exported worldwide. The Western Australia wine regions and the South Australian wine are all notable. It is the 2nd largest wine importer to India and has a large domestic wine market with locals consuming up to five hundred million liters of wine annually from their favorite wine merchant. In every Australian region by state, wine is produced. There are more than sixty wine designated regions which total one hundred and sixty thousand hectares. Explore the Australia Wine Regions Map The wine regions you will find on the map are mainly in the cooler, southern locations of the country and these include Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. The regions for wine in these locations produce different wine styles and varieties and do take advantage of the specific ‘Terroir’ including soil types, topography and differences in climate. The primary varieties include the Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Semillon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The most famous growing area in Australia is called the Penfolds Grange. Beginning the year 1962, this vintage which is from the year 1955 was submitted to different competitions. Through the years, this vintage won more than fifty medals. The 1971 vintage won 1st place at the Shiraz/Syrah Paris Wine Olympics. The vintage from the year 1990 was named by the magazine Wine Spectator as the ‘1995 Red Wine of the Year.’ Robert Parker, who is an influential critic and known for his love of wines that are Bordeaux, wrote that the Penfolds Grange replaced the Bordeaux Petrus as the world’s most concentrated and exotic. Hugh Johnson, wine critic called the Grange the Southern Hemisphere’s First Growth. With almost two thousand producers of Australian wines, you will be surprised to know that most of these are small operations. The market domination is done by a few major companies. Many of those brands are well known in other countries including the US, such as Yellow Tail, Jacob's Creek, Little Penguin and Penfolds.
